A family member’s fear of flying prevented Rosanne and Edward Ritchie getting married in Bermuda 15 years ago, but yesterday they got to enjoy the next best thing.

The happy couple from Long Island, New York, decided to return to the island — as they have done so every year since their honeymoon — to renew their wedding vows.

The overcast weather failed to dampen the mood in Jobson’s Cove where the ceremony took place and where they visited during their honeymoon.

Mrs Ritchie said: “We make it a point to come back to Bermuda each and every year on or around our anniversary.

“This will mark our 15th trip to Bermuda and the fifth for our daughter Cierra Rose.

“We picked Jobson’s Cove because on our honeymoon we stopped there while cruising on the bikes, went for a swim and took some photos.

“My husband was sitting on a rock and was trying to keep himself up for a photo. Before he knew it he lost his wedding ring in the ocean.

“We kept going under to find it. All of a sudden a lady yells over and said do you need help? Her husband dived down once and came up with his ring.

“Bermuda is very special to us as a family, as is Jobson’s Cove.”

The Ritchies renewed their vows yesterday evening accompanied by their daughter, Bermudian friends they met in 2002 at Philadelphia Airport and became close to, as well as friends from their home in Long Island. The ceremony was officiated by a local canon law.

Ms Ritchie added: “It’s been very nice — we love it here. We are hoping the sun pops up tomorrow so we can do Harbour Nights.

“We always wanted to get married in Bermuda, our dream. We are excited we are here to have the opportunity to do this. This is the next best thing.”

Following the ceremony the couple made their way to Elbow Beach to enjoy a hearty meal.
