Remembering the tragedy of Fabian

Today marks 13 years since the island was struck by Hurricane Fabian.

The worst storm to hit Bermuda in 50 years, Fabian claimed the lives of four, including three police officers.

Pc Stephen Symons, Pc Nicole O’Connor, civilian station duty officer Gladys Saunders and Manuel Pacheco, a civilian, died September 5, 2003, after their vehicles stalled on the Causeway.

This morning Jeffrey Baron, the Minister of National Security, reflected on Fabian’s impact.

“Little did we know that September day what that storm would bring. More than the wind, storm surge and damage to homes, we lost four individuals in the prime of life. Two of them were former colleagues of mine who served Bermuda in uniform.

“Although 13 years have passed, I remember them fondly — and I know that Bermudians continue to remember the families of all those we lost that day.”
