Summerhaven worker to fight sacking in court

At least one former staff member at the Summerhaven residence for the physically disabled has vowed to fight his dismissal in court, as tenants call for his reinstatement.

A co-ordinator at the assisted living facility, where protests over management were held over the weekend, Roger Richardson said he was wrongfully terminated on May 25 for exposing conditions at Summerhaven.

“There is a law in place that is supposed to protect people like me,” Mr Richardson said, referring to the 2011 Good Governance Act that included provisions to protect whistleblowers from dismissal.

The aide said he had made a video recording of a Summerhaven patient who suffered a head injury on the facility’s bus, only to be told that he had compromised privacy.

He was fired on May 25 by administrator Don Ricardo Wynn — who was also fired last week at the behest of John Powell, Summerhaven’s chairman.

A petition from residents has called for both men to be reinstated, saying Mr Richardson had gone “over and beyond to assist and make life easier for us”, while Mr Wynn was called a “selfless” advocate for residents.

Mr Richardson said he intended to pursue his case in court, adding: “I can’t be fired for something that’s true.”
