Rescue operation off Bermuda

Norwegian Gem

A 43-year-old cruise ship passenger is expected to be airlifted from a passing cruise ship later this evening after suffering a suspected appendicitis.

The Norwegian Gem was on its way from New York to Antigua when it diverted towards Bermuda to rendezvous with the Coastguard helicopter.

The rescue operation, which is expected to take place at around midnight tonight 70 miles southwest of the island, is being co-ordinated by Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre and RCC Norfolk.

The Norwegian Gem contacted Bermuda Radio early this morning to report that the US national was in need of medical evacuation.

The Coastguard C-130 aircraft and helicopter are due to refuel in Bermuda within the next few hours before meeting with the liner shortly afterwards.
