Anniversary marked by schools presentation

Marking success: Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva, left, and David Carruthers of Crime Stoppers Bermuda, centre, with representatives of local schools

The 20th anniversary of Crime Stoppers Bermuda has been marked with a presentation of a volume of the police force’s history to various local schools.

David Carruthers, chairman of Crime Stoppers’ local branch, said the organisation had received almost 4,000 tips during its two decades — leading to the recovery of $1.6 million in stolen property, and seizures of drugs with a total street value of almost $25 million.

The History of Policing In Bermuda, which covers the period 1620 to 2014, would prove useful for students studying law enforcement or Bermuda history in general, Commissioner Michael DeSilva said. The Berkeley Institute, Bermuda College, Dellwood Middle School, Port Royal Primary, Purvis Primary, Saltus Grammar School, Warwick Academy and the Whitney Institute were each given two copies in celebration of the partnership between police, Crime Stoppers and the media.
