A car was left hanging over the water after crashing through a wall on Harbour Road yesterday.

Witnesses told how the vehicle hydroplaned around a corner before the accident in the area of Lower Ferry, Paget, at about 1pm.

While its front broke through the wall, leaving the vehicles front two tyres dangling over the harbour, it stopped before going over the edge and nobody was injured.

One woman said she was travelling along the road when she came across the accident and recognised the driver as a friend.

“She says she’s fine,” said the woman, who asked not to be named. “When I got here, she was already being helped out of the car. She said the car started dancing around on the road and she wasn’t able to stop in time.”

Another witness, who also asked not to be named, said the driver was travelling away from Hamilton when she appeared to lose control on the wet road.

“She came around the corner and just started hydroplaning,” the witness said. “She wasn’t speeding. If she was speeding, the car wouldn’t have stopped. It would have gone right through. I think the engine stopped her.”

Police and fire service staff attended the scene and the car was towed away shortly after 2.15pm.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: “Initial information indicates that the vehicle involved struck a wall and ended up hanging off the edge of the roadway, with efforts to remove the damaged vehicle now in progress.”
