Summerhaven kicks off new chapter with Christmas Eve party

Summerhaven

A fresh chapter has begun for the Summerhaven home for the physically challenged, which is seeking to reconnect with its sponsors under a new, government-backed administration.

The first order of business: getting the community involved, particularly with music, for a party planned to go ahead on Christmas Eve at the Smith’s facility.

“It’s late, but we’re trying to get some entertainers, maybe a dance group,” said ClairAnn Moore, one of Summerhaven’s 19 residents, who she said feel “safe and at peace with the greater things about to take place”.

Two staff have appointed by the Ministry of Health and Seniors, which stepped in this week over concerns for those who call Summerhaven home.

Backed by a court order, the new administrators are to remain until the ministry is satisfied that Summerhaven is running smoothly.

“With all the negative things that people have been hearing, a lot of the sponsors have backed off,” said co-ordinator Yolanda Dowling.

“Any assistance that we can get here is much needed, and people can feel safe with it.

“For that reason, I would like to thank the Ministry of Health and Seniors for interceding here.

“I’d also like to thank the Ageing and Disability Services Office for their help. It’s only going to get better.”
