A trio of waste bins artfully decorated by Warwick Academy students have been placed at White Hill Field as part of a beautification process.

While one of the three bins is painted in the blue and canary yellow of the Somerset Eagles, the second is dedicated to the White Hill community and the third is decorated with Sandys landmarks.

Anthony Whaley, who decorated the bins with fellow Warwick Academy students Cameron Lee-Ming and Connor Strohecker, said he was happy to have the opportunity to give to the community through the KBB Artful Bins project.

“I have always been a great supporter of KBB and being able to do this with friends, to do something for the community, was fun,” he said. “I thought this would be a great project.

“I’m not from the area. I’m from Devonshire, so doing the research was a hard part. It was a bit of a trek, a bit of a journey to come up here and learn a bit about the parish.”

KBB head Anne Hyde noted that the bins were donated by Derek Wooley from ROCON Services, using paint donated by Pembroke Paint.

While Craig Cannonier, the Minister of Public Works, was announced to attend the press event, Sylvan Richards, the Minister of Social Development and Sports, represented the Bermuda Government at the event instead.

He praised the hard work of the students, saying: “The attention to detail certainly shows us that these students have spent many hours researching the subjects, planning the designs and painting the bins.

“I am thrilled that White Hill Field — one of the best fields for playing soccer and cricket on the island — has been chosen as the most recent location for these bins.

“As you may recall, we pledged in our throne speech this year to build a facility at White Hill Field for use by the West End community and the general public.

“Our hope is that more people will consequently use this venue for community sports. However, with more people, typically comes more trash ... so these bins will be a big help in encouraging field users to properly dispose of their trash ... and they look great!”
