Passion for law leads to day of celebration

Love and respect: Kentisha Tweed (right) paid tribute to her mother, Kimaire Burns, as she was Called to the Bar earlier this month.

For Kentisha Tweed a life’s ambition was achieved when she was Called to the Bar in her home country this month.

It was the culmination of many years of hard work and came two years after she was Called to the Bar of England and Wales.

Ms Tweed, 30, has just completed a pupillage with Amicus Law Chambers and is looking forward to putting her skills and experiences to the test.

During her official induction to the Bermuda Bar, she said: “For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to become an attorney and have had a passion for law. My passion stems from giving back.

“I understand the importance of individuals needing legal representation. Being an attorney puts me in a position to advocate on behalf of those who are not in a position to advocate for themselves.”

The former Berkeley Institute student left Bermuda to take her LLB Law degree at the University of Kent in England.

She then began her Bar Professional Training Course at City Law School in London before being Called to the Bar for the first time.

Ms Tweed then returned home to embark on her pupillage with Amicus, which has now offered her a position as an associate.

She thanked the firm’s directors for their support, and also recognised a number of family members for standing by her throughout her studies.

“I can earnestly say that I have indeed been pushed out of my comfort zone these past 12 months,” she said.

“I have learnt many lessons. However, my most valuable lesson that I have learnt is to always be fully prepared.”

Ms Tweed added: “I need to express my gratitude to Knowledge Quest, the Green family and Jim Butterfield of Butterfield and Vallis for their sponsorship.

“I would like to thank all of my family and friends for their love, support and continued encouragement throughout my journey. It is a privilege to be a part of such an honourable and internationally esteemed profession and I will ensure that I continue be a great asset not only to the legal fraternity, but the community as a whole.”
