Prefects at Saltus Grammar School have taken the role of teachers as they aim to help educate younger students on the importance of accepting others.

As part of the school year’s theme of ‘diversity and acceptance’, the prefects organised a Diversity Day for middle and upper school students.

“Workshops — designed and organised by the prefects — were centred on mental illness, physical exceptionalities, gender (gender equality and acceptance of sexual orientation) and cultural diversity,” said a school spokesperson.

“The presentations were followed by fun activities including Culture Jeopardy, a Gender Equality Scavenger Hunt and an Obstacle Course to help students better understand physical exceptionalities.”

Prefect Alexandra Barnes said: “I thought the prefect team did an excellent job of presenting information that is often considered uncomfortable in a palatable and entertaining way.

“Overall, Diversity Day was a resounding success and I believe students finished the day with a better understanding of our world and the people who live in it.”

Nicole Chichon, Deputy Head (Student Life), said as well as teaching about diversity, the event also provided a chance to provide leadership opportunities for the senior students.

“They did a very good job indeed and I think they not only set a very high standard, they also laid the groundwork for this to be repeated in the future.”
