Pirates will make victims walk the plank

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation has again taken to “piracy” to help raise funds for its educational programmes.

This weekend, the foundation will host its Pirates of Bermuda fundraiser with notable members of the public having to raise donations or walk the plank.

As with past years, members of the public can vote to “save” or “sink” the various hostages through donations at www.ptix.bm/piratesor at the event itself at the #1 Car Park between 2pm and 5.30pm.

This year six private schools all have hostage teams participating, with funds raised going towards the cost of their school’s voyages on the Spirit of Bermuda.

Meanwhile, Jon Brunson of Scars has volunteered himself to be a hostage with the goal of raising funds so Scars can host a fundraising event on the Spirit of Bermuda during this year’s America’s Cup.

They will be joined by four AC ladies teams, two sailers from Team BAR, several corporate heads, local athletes and a collection of “spirited supporters”.

BSF is also working with the Duck of Edinburgh Awards, bringing several young people involved in the programme on board the Spirit.

A spokeswoman added that His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, who is due to visit the island as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ 50th anniversary, will be conducting a “sail by” during the event, giving him a chance to see unsuccessful fundraisers take the plunge.
