Woman killed after husband crashes bike

Rochelle Butterfield, a 47-year-old Cabinet Office worker, was killed after a motorcycle driven by her husband crashed in St George’s.

Mrs Butterfield was the pillion passenger when the vehicle left Kindley Field Road near Stone Crusher Corner, at around 1.30am yesterday. The husband, 51, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, according to Bermuda Police Service.

Paying tribute in a statement, Michael Dunkley, the Premier, said: “Rochelle was a beloved member of our Cabinet Office family and all of us in the Cabinet Office, including my ministerial colleagues, are shocked and devastated about her passing. Rochelle was truly a wonderful and special individual who had such a warm and amazing spirit.

“Our hearts are extremely heavy today and our thoughts and prayers are with Rochelle’s family at this terribly difficult time. She will be greatly missed.”

Mrs Butterfield is the second person to die on Bermuda’s roads in 2017.

A police spokesman said: “Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, which continued as she was transported via ambulance to hospital and on arrival, Mrs Butterfield was pronounced dead at 2.25am.

“Her husband was later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and is expected to be released on police bail later today pending further inquiries.

“A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist Mrs Butterfield’s family at this difficult time. An autopsy is anticipated and the investigation into the second road fatality of 2017 continues.”

Witnesses, or anyone who knows the whereabouts of Mrs Butterfield in the hours prior to 1.30am yesterday, should telephone police on 295-0011.
