Relay for Life to support radiation unit

Cancer survivors and those who lost their lives to the disease will be honoured at the next month’s Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Relay For Life at the National Sports Centre.

A 24-hour event, starting on Friday, May 12, the relay will see teams of between 10 to 12 people getting together with one of the team always on the track.

The idea behind it “is cancer never sleeps, so for one night, we won’t either.”

All money raised will go towards the radiation therapy unit that is opening next month.

The relay will begin at 6.30pm at the North Field of the NSC with a Luminaria Ceremony — sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd. for the third year in a row — taking place around 9pm.

Luminaria bags, which have been individually decorated, will be placed on the track with candles lit up inside and as the ceremony begins, participants will walk a silent lap.

PwC Bermuda partner Scott Watson-Brown said. “This is the third year we will be fielding a large team of our people to volunteer to manage the luminaria and participate in the relay.

“Cancer impacts the lives of many people, and our firm and employees feel very strongly about supporting Relay For Life and helping to raise funds to support the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and the island’s first radiation therapy initiative.”

“The Luminaria bags honour the memory of the loved ones we’ve lost, those currently in treatment, and those who’ve overcome cancer,” added a statement. “Buying and decorating a Luminaria, supports Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s radiation therapy initiative which will see the Centre offering radiation therapy on island by this summer.”

Luminarias may be purchased for $10 at PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd., 7 Church Street West or at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, 46 Point Finger Road, Paget.
