Never the shy type, Bermuda’s international reggae artist Collie Buddz, aka Colin Harper, has predicted the island’s legalisation of cannabis.

The topic arose in his interview this month with the cannabis-friendly web journal Merry Jane, on the single for his upcoming album.

Good Life, the title track for Collie’s second album is an unapologetic paean to the source of his reggae name, along with other amusements — plus a chance to talk about Bermuda. The artist was raised here, although born in New Orleans, and conducted his telephone interview from the island.

Largely devoted to music, the talk turned to Collie’s own strain of the drug, “Bermuda Triangle”, and the island’s cannabis politics: pot is “still very illegal for the most part”.

He adds: “But I think in the next few years it’ll be legalised medicinally. I’m almost 100 per cent positive on that. So at least that’s a step in the right direction.”

The island has a ways to go: a cannabis caution policy was sent on from the Director of Public Prosecutions to police in February, outlining a “three strikes” approach to persons found holding less than three grammes of the drug.

Cannabis remains strictly illegal, however, with decriminalisation still under discussion.
