Mom, you’re a shining star

Mother's Day letter: Oneka Smith and Ozara Smith, 6 (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Oneka Smith received a priceless gift this Mother’s Day.

The mother of two had not made any special plans — but when her six-year-old daughter Ozara read her a five-page letter titled “why my mum is the best mother in the world”, it made her day.

And she was so touched by the gesture that she felt compelled to share it.

“I was absolutely amazed,” the 36-year-old, of Pembroke, told The Royal Gazette. “All I can say is that she made my Mother’s Day that much more special. She made me feel like I was worth celebrating.”

Ozara had told her mother that she had the letter on Friday but Ms Smith, who is also mother to eight-year-old Shammai, wanted to wait to read it until Sunday. On Mother’s Day, Ozara, who attends Harrington Sound Primary School, offered to read it to her.

“I was really touched. It did bring tears to my eyes. I was actually having a bad morning because I knew I couldn’t go to brunch or do anything special.

“When she read that letter, I was like this by far is priceless — it really set my day. I was so happy for the entire day.”

Ms Smith, who works in a high school, said the words her daughter used stood out to her the most.

She explained that they had been using figurative language with the high school students and when she saw the amount of figurative language her daughter used, she was stunned.

“I just wanted to share it. I really felt honoured as a mother that my six-year-old would even write to that extent.

“She just went 6 in December and she is very intelligent. She’s been excelling in her school. And she loves to read, that’s another thing.”

Here is Ozara’s letter:

“My mommy is pretty just like a shining star. You look like a 1,000,000 roses. You tuck me in and read me a bedtime story.

“When it is my birthday, she makes me a chocolate cake. She cooks the best. She is a queen.

“My mommy prays over me and my brother. She always sprays perfume on me and it makes me laugh every time.

“She protects me and she helps me if I am down. We ride bikes together with training wheels.

“She is the best in the world. My mom works as hard as a busy bee. My mommy is wonderful. I can kiss her all day.

“I do my chores and she does her chores. If she died, I would cry for the rest of my life until I die.

“She helps me do my homework. I care about my mom. If I made my mom a cupcake she would love me. She is nice. She loves me.

“My mommy smells like 99 roses. My mom is as sweet as a peach. She is an angel. I would run around the field 54 times for her that is how much I love my mommy.

“I love my mom all the way to the moon and all the way to out of the space. She guides me everywhere I go. She gives me so much.

“My mom loves me. On Sundays she gives heart sandwiches. That’s what I like about my beautiful mom. She makes great treats.

“I sit by my mommy in church every Sunday and Saturday. I do things with her like hopscotch and play dancing. She is great.

“When I get in trouble, my mommy still loves me. She is giving. If I was my mom I would love everybody. I love you because you are nice, great, loving and faithful.

“She even teaches me my left and right. I love my mommy.”
