Race sailor abandons boat

Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre

A sailor taking part in the Bermuda One-Two race was forced to abandon his boat on Monday evening after getting into difficulties nearly 200 nautical miles from the island.

The lone sailor on board Spadefoot contacted the Coast Guard in Boston, as well as Bermuda Radio to relay concerns about the seaworthiness of his vessel and his intention to abandon into a liferaft.

Using the yellow brick tracking system, a fellow race participant on board Solaris diverted to pick up the sailor before continuing on his way towards Bermuda.

At 10am yesterday, Solaris was 110 nautical miles short of Bermuda.
