Busy weekend for marine rescuers

Marine Police boat Rescue 2

A woman was injured after striking her head during the Non-Mariners Race in one of several incidents on the water on Sunday.

Bermuda Radio was contacted by the sailboat Buoy Racer at 5pm on Sunday, with those on board reporting that a woman was unconscious.

A Marine Police report into multiple incidents read: “The patient was taken on board Rescue Two and subsequently ashore for follow-up medical attention.”

At around 12.40pm, Rescue Co-ordination Centre was contacted by a passenger reporting a charter catamaran had grounded off Point Shares.

The report stated: “The call quickly ended as the person reported they were in the process of evacuating to another vessel.

“There was some confusion as to the name of the vessel with the original caller indicating they were on board the Sally Bum Bum but following further investigation by Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, it was determined the person was actually on board the Big Bum Bum.

“Marine Police unit Rescue One was dispatched from Mangrove Bay as a controlled evacuation of 30 passengers continued. The vessel operator reported they had encountered gear problems and drifted on to a reef.”

Big Bum Bum was taken under tow by Rescue One to Albuoy’s Point without further incident.

At around 2.05pm Marine Police returned to the waters off Point Shares after receiving a report of a punt being capsized.

“A member of the public at Point Shares witnessed an 8ft blue punt, with four persons on board, swamped and capsized due to the large wake of a passing vessel,” the report stated. “The occupants were left in the water, scrambling to the nearby shore, and left the scene.

“The Marine Police attended in Rescue One and righted the vessel, bailed it out and towed it to Mill Creek to secure it to a nearby mooring.”

Bermuda Radio received another call shortly after 5pm by the 27ft Boston Whaler Bad Tuna Bone, reporting that the vessel’s engine had been disabled about 100m from Castle Point.

The subsequent report stated: “The vessel suffered hydraulics failure but had already arranged assistance and were awaiting arrival of a tow ashore.”
