The fourth golf tournament in memory of chef and golfer Tomasz Tabor will be held at Belmont Hills Golf Course on October 30.

Last year’s event in support of the Bermuda Hospitality Institute raised $20,000 for hospitality scholarships and programmes in Mr Tabor’s name.

Of the funds raised, $5,000 were used to put students through the internationally certified waiter’s programme offered by Bermuda College in collaboration with the BHI, the Restaurant Division of the Chamber of Commerce and the Bermuda Tourism Authority since January 2017. Students were chosen who want to work in the food service industry in Bermuda after graduating.

Four scholarships were also set up — one $7,000 and two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded for overseas studies and one $1,000 scholarship for local studies.

Organisers said the winners would be announced shortly.

The final $3,000 was used to sponsor a Junior Chef Culinary Programme in July. During this summer camp, children between the ages of 10 and 15 learnt the basics of knife safety, kitchen sanitation, menu reading and preparation, nutrition facts and fiction, label reading, shopping on a budget, table settings and dining etiquette.

The programme focused on fresh ingredients and seasonal menus and learning how to cook three to four-course meals daily from scratch while working with child-friendly commercial pots and pans and professional grade knives.

The organisers said: “Mr Tabor would have definitely been a supporter of this programme, inspiring the next generation of chefs, so we are delighted to be able to support it on his behalf.”

Since the tournament was started three years ago, it has raised $65,000.

The organisers added: “We are keen to continue Mr Tabor’s legacy as a gifted chef, golfer and teacher and hope that you will be able to join us on the course again this year.”

Pre-registration information will be sent out soon.
