Three autism therapists celebrate milestone

The autism charity Tomorrow’s Voices has announced new qualifications for three of its therapists.

Frances Parkes, Jahnae Harvey and Naomi Taylor have all put in years of work to earn their Board Certified Behaviour Analyst Certifications.

Ms Harvey is the second Bermudian to receive her BCBA, after fellow Tomorrow’s Voices therapist Natasha Pedro-Petty passed in 2015.

A statement from the charity said that clients at the Early Intervention Centre now have access to four certified behaviour analysts.

Ms Taylor called the landmark “fantastic” for applied behaviour analysis in Bermuda.

Both she and Ms Parkes came to Tomorrow’s Voices from Jigsaw School, a special education institute in Britain.

Tomorrow’s Voices has become Bermuda’s only source of one-on-one therapy using applied behaviour analysis to work with children on the autism spectrum and with other developmental issues.

Sitting the BCBA exams required balancing long hours of study with full-time clinical work, Ms Parkes said.

But for Ms Parkes and Ms Taylor, the time at Tomorrow’s Voices also enabled further research.

This year, the Association for Behavior Analysis International accepted their research papers — and they were invited to present their work at the 43rd Annual ABAI Convention.

Their tough job presents “an amazing challenge and brings with it some of the best, most rewarding moments”, Ms Taylor said.

Thea Furbert, co-founder of Tomorrow’s Voices and chair of the board, commended the three for their “long hours of study and supervision while working full-time”.

Ms Furbert added: “We are also proud to have another Bermudian, Jahnae Harvey, receiving the BCBA Certification. Her achievement as the second Bermudian to receive this Certification will no doubt benefit the community for many years to come.”
