Saltus Grammar School raised more than $6,000 towards Caribbean islands devastated by hurricanes.

Head of School Deryn Lavell said in a statement: “I’m reminded how interconnected we all are on a global scale when I see the warmth and generosity of communities such as Saltus coming together to support friends and families affected by the recent devastating hurricanes. We’re very glad to be part of the Hurricane Relief effort.”

Cash will go to the Bermuda Red Cross campaign set up after Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck last month.

Ann Spencer-Arscott, executive director for Bermuda Red Cross, stated: “We are so pleased with the outpouring of support we are getting from the community.

“As an Alumni, I am particularly proud of the effort that students and faculty made to support our Hurricane Disaster Appeal.”

In the first six months of the recovery phase, money will be used to provide food, water and hygiene kits to people in shelters, as well as purchasing tarpaulins, mosquito spray, flashlights, and kitchen sets.

Cash will also go towards tackling compromised water systems, ensuring health facilities are operational and purchasing cots and other bedding supplies for the shelters.

Bermuda Red Cross has so far received $81,761, not including matching funds from Bermuda Government of $25,000 and $10,000 from Clarien Bank.

Saltus Grammer School raised more than $6,000 for the Red Cross hurricane relief fund. The total on the cheque was just short of $6,000 but was boosted by a late $20 donation (Photograph supplied)
