A cruise ship made an emergency detour to the island last weekend after an elderly passenger was injured on board.

The Maritime Operations Centre said the Veendam diverted to the island when a 71-year-old passenger suffered a severe fracture to her wrist in a fall.

The centre said the Veendam was en route to the Azores, from Florida, when it turned for Bermuda, arriving on Sunday night.

The injured woman was transferred to land by pilot boat and taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The Holland America Lines’ Veendam is an occasional visitor to the island and visited six times this year.
