Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is one of four local charities to win a $12,500 cash award from a reinsurance firm.

WindReach, Bermuda Zoological Society and the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies also got the same amount from Global Indemnity Re, which has donated a total of $320,000 over the past four years.

Marie-Joelle Chapleau, chief operating officer at Global Indemnity Re, said: “Our annual donations are based on multi-segment sectors. We provide support for the education, environment, health, and arts and culture. Since Bermuda has been our host for more than ten years, we believe that it is important to help the success of the local community in many different sectors. Since the start of our philanthropic strategy, GIRe has given back more than $320,000 to the island.”

The turtle project at the BZS, the therapeutic and educational experiences at WindReach and BFIS training and education programmes for Bermudians aiming at careers in the insurance industry will benefit from the donations.

Tom Butterfield, founder and creative director of Masterworks, said the donation will help the museum continue to produce installations as it heads into its tenth year in 2018.

He said: “We’re very pleased that there are businesses on the island that really have a social conscious and that they are donating funds to those organisations that are doing work that benefits the local community.

“Exhibits are one of the more accessible forms of arts education and this is a real shot in the arm for our exhibits that seek to engage the viewer. We’re thrilled that some of this money can go towards our educational programmes.”
