Free health fair in Somerset

A Somerset pharmacy has lined up a string of health professionals for a free health fair.

A community dental nurse, an asthma nurse, a dietitian and a doctor will offer their services at Caesar’s Pharmacy on Saturday.

Caesar’s pharmacist and manager Krzysztof Puciaty said: “By working in the community, we see many patients who can better manage their health conditions, be it asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure and so on, but they do not always have time to go to the doctor nor do they think that how they’re feeling is normal.

“Sometimes cost is a factor so we are trying to organise regular events where they can come and be seen at no charge by healthcare professionals who can signpost them and encourage them to make the appropriate changes.

“In many cases, all that’s needed to make a real difference in their health is a short conversation with a pharmacist or a nurse to reinforce what has been told by their doctor.”

Community nurses will give free flu shots to people aged 65 and over and for $10 to those under 65. They will also check blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels and give consultations on the results.

The asthma nurse will give consultation on asthma techniques and therapies.

The dietitian will measure weight and body fat ratios, with advice on the results as well as healthy eating guidance.

The dental nurse will provide free dental care products and conduct a survey on oral health.

She will also assess the need for a dental nurse in the parish.

Dr Stanley James will give advice on the diabetes reversal programme he has piloted.

The programme works with type 2 diabetes patients to reverse the condition through a diet and exercise plan designed to reduce the need for medication.

The Health Fair will run from 9am to 3pm at the pharmacy at 30 Somerset Road.
