Original tech-hub plan is changed

Change of plans: David Burt, the Premier, has shifted his sights to Hamilton for a smaller tech start-up (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Plans for a tech hub in Bermuda have changed, the Premier has said.

David Burt said that the original plan to create a technology centre at Southside in St David’s could be replaced by a smaller start-up in Hamilton.

He said: “We might start small inside the City of Hamilton in order to build that incubator up and then we can establish it at a larger place such as Southside. That’s the current thinking.”

A bid to attract hi-tech industries to the island was a significant plank in the Progressive Labour Party programme to diversify the island’s economy since the idea was first floated in 2016.

A technology park, at first slated for Southside and buildings owned by the Bermuda Land Development Corporation, would cater to small start-up enterprises.

A request for information was issued by the Government last November for the Southside site.

The request for information was said to have fulfilled one of the PLP’s campaign pledges for its first 100 days in government.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, Minister of Public Works, who is responsible for Southside, did not respond to a request for comment.
