A charity has appealed for dozens of volunteers to help provide training and coaching to at-risk youngsters.

Michael Weeks, Minister of Social Development and Sport, kicked off the enrolment drive for the Mirrors Programme in the run-up to its third year of SuperCamp programming.

Mr Weeks said that a “phenomenal” year of camps and programmes were planned “with a range of opportunities for youth participants and community volunteers”.

He said that the programme aimed to serve about 150 students through three camps.

A six-day camp for 60 children aged 11 to 13 will be held from August 21 to 26. A four-day version of the camp is set to run during the 2019 winter break.

Another six-day camp will be held in October for 35 students aged 14 to 18.

The fall camp will be followed by an eight-month follow-through programme.

Mr Weeks added that 130 volunteers were wanted “to support transforming the lives of these youth”.

Volunteer roles include positions attached to the camps, team volunteers and committed partner coaches.

Youngsters have met with volunteer coaches to work towards various goals, ranging from improved grades to better relationships over the past five months.

The pupils learnt about building trust, risk-taking and building positive relationships.

Midyear reviews found that 83 per cent of the young people involved were more confident in their communication skills and 97 per cent of them said they were more confident about developing positive relationships with new people.

The next volunteer presentations will be on May 8 at 12.30pm and 5.30pm. The next youth orientation will be held on May 15 at 5.30pm. All sessions are held in the Mirrors Office inside Global House on Church Street.
