More than 700 people have signed up for an annual Earth Day cleanup this weekend organised by charity Keep Bermuda Beautiful.

KBB called on more people to volunteer to work on 34 separate locations across the island on Sunday.

About 400 of the volunteers are schoolchildren enrolled in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation’s after-school programme.

Hotels, schools and businesses will also contribute teams, with groups from Saltus, Bermuda High School, Paget Primary School, Raleigh Bermuda, Belco and others taking part.

Anne Hyde, KBB executive director, said: “This is a great opportunity for family and friends to get together and enjoy the spring sunshine and be active outdoors.

“Participants will see first-hand the quantity and types of trash that have fallen from overflowing waste bins, blown out of the back of uncovered trucks or been carelessly dropped by people who are passing through our public roads, parks and trails.

“The Earth Day cleanup addresses the immediate need to clean up to keep our island looking it’s best.

“It also heightens our awareness of the impact of single-use plastic on our environment and for everyone to be more careful in their consumption and disposal habits.”

The event will run from 9am until noon.

Those who have not registered can do so on Sunday between 9am and noon at Kindley Field Road, St George’s, or by cleaning up their own neighbourhood
