By-election nomination day

Today is the nomination day for candidates to represent Paget East and Warwick North East.

Constituencies 22 and 25 face double by-elections on June 7 after One Bermuda Alliance MPs Grant Gibbons and Jeff Baron stepped down.

Curtis Richardson will make his second bid for Paget East on behalf of the Progressive Labour Party, while newcomer Curtis Dickinson has been picked as the PLP challenger for Warwick North East.

The OBA has chosen Scott Pearman and Justin Mathias for 22 and 25. The hopefuls must report today to the respective polling stations of Bermuda College student centre and Bright Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church Hall. Today is also the chance for independents to throw their hats in the ring.

Mark Pettingill became the independent MP for Warwick North East after resigning from the ruling OBA in March 2017, but he declined to run in the General Election in July when the PLP swept to power.

No independent candidates ran for Paget East in July 2017.

Constituency 22, where there are 1,475 registered voters, is viewed as an Opposition stronghold. Constituency 25, with 1,254 eligible voters signed up, is more of a marginal seat — although it has been held by the OBA since 2012.
