Two fires break out

There was a fire on Ewing Street today.

Two fires broke out this morning, one at a two-storey residence in Spring Benny Drive, Sandys, and another at a three-storey building on Ewing Street, Pembroke.

There were no reported injuries at ether incident.

At about 6.10am, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a basement fire on Spring Benny Drive, Sandys. They responded to the incident with two fire vehicles and eight firefighters.

Lieutenant Russann Francis said: “On the arrival of the first appliance, there was thick black smoke seen billowing from the doorway of the lower level of the house.

“Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus and equipped with a one and a half inch hose line began to extinguish the fire.”

When the fire was brought under control, firefighters entered the premises to ventilate and ensure there was no extension of fire into the main home.

The unit was under construction and sustained heat and smoke damage.

The fire on Ewing Street broke out shortly after 11am. BFRS responded to the incident with two fire vehicles and six firefighters.

Ms Francis said: “On our arrival we met a neighbour using a garden hose to extinguish the fire who explained that he saw black smoke coming from the apartment and saw a small window ‘explode’ from the premises.” Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus took over from the neighbour to extinguish the flames taking into consideration the construction. The dwelling sustained minor structural and heavy smoke damage.

There were no reported injuries at the incident.

Ms Francis added: “The Fire Service would like to express our gratitude to the helpful neighbour for his quick thinking in using a garden hose to contain the fire prior to our arrival.”

Lieutenant Francis stated that “this is an unfortunate incident which had the potential to be a lot worse had this gentleman not intervened”.

The fire is under investigation.
