Talk on North Korea

Closed society: the poster for tonight's BUEI Talks lecture by Scott Stallard about his visit to North Korea five years ago

Photographer Scott Stallard ventured into the “hermit kingdom” of North Korea as part of a rare tour five years ago.

With the country still in the headlines, Mr Stallard will share his experiences tonight in a presentation at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

Mr Stallard said: “I found the entire experience to be very much the opposite of every single thing I was led to believe.

“I’m hoping I can give people a different view from the country they have probably been hearing about.”

Mr Stallard said he was given the chance to visit North Korea through travel group Mountain Travel Sobek.

He said: “I had gone with them to see the mountain gorillas in Uganda and then to Northern Greenland to hunt with the native Inuit people. When they got eight passes to take people to North Korea, they called me because they thought it might be something I would be interested in.”

Mr Stallard said the group were joined by two local guides, and had the opportunity to speak with many residents of the country.

At his presentation, Mr Stallard said he will not only talk about his experiences but show a variety of pictures and a video of his time in North Korea.

Expedition to North Korea will begin at 7.30pm at the BUEI Auditorium. Tickets cost $20 for BUEI members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students
