Public bathrooms in Hamiltion have been closed because of theft, vandalism and criminal activity.

A City of Hamilton spokeswoman said the restrooms on Union Street opposite the Bermuda Industrial Union building, along with those on Victoria Street near the bus terminal, would remain shut until repairs could be made and cameras installed outside.

Patrick Cooper, city engineer, said: “We have had to take this action due to the continual theft, vandalism and general unnecessary mess that occurs on a daily basis.

“The bathrooms are often used for illegal activity with the police having attended several incidents.

He added: “We want to be able to provide clean, safe facilities for the general public.”
