The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service yesterday highlighted the safe use of barbecues over the summer.

Reginald Burchall, chief fire officer, said: “Our goal is to raise awareness on safety by the delivery of monthly messages to the public throughout the year with some messages designed to target activities associated with holidays and events.

“It is our hope that the messages will be embraced and applied towards ‘A Safer Community’.”

The notice warned that July is the peak month for grill fires and offered tips to keep the public safe.

It added that propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors and placed “well away” from homes, deck railings and overhanging branches.

The flyer said that charcoal starter fluid should never be added to the fire and accelerants should be kept away from children.

The fire service also recommended that people using propane barbecues should check the gas tank hose for leaks before they use equipment for the first time.
