City Hall is to turn red as part of a worldwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics.

Major landmarks, stadiums and iconic buildings around the world will be lit up tomorrow to mark the milestone.

The event was designed to support the “Inclusion Revolution”, which is the Special Olympics’ mission to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities and create inclusive communities.

More than 170 landmarks worldwide will participate in the Light Up for Inclusion initiative, creating a global display of tolerance, respect and celebration of difference.

Timothy Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics International, said: “We are grateful for the tremendous support to help celebrate and raise awareness for people with intellectual disabilities regardless of where they live in the world.

“Light Up for Inclusion symbolises the continuation and evolution of Special Olympics’ mission.”

The main Special Olympics 50th anniversary celebration will be held in Chicago this week.

Chicago was the birthplace of the first International Special Olympics Summer Games, which were held at Soldier Field in July 1968.

The next Special Olympics World Summer Games will take place in Abu Dhabi in March 2019.

Local businesses have been encouraged to hold a $5 red and denim day on Friday and members of the public have been asked to sign an inclusion pledge at jointherevolution.org/Pledge.
