The Premier helped celebrate the birthday of a 102-year-old man with a special visit.

David Burt wished Brownlow Place a happy birthday on Tuesday.

Mr Burt said: “On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I extend heartfelt birthday greetings to a truly remarkable gentleman.”

He added: “It was an honour to celebrate with Mr Place and his family.”

Mr Place, who lives in St David’s, was a printer for the Bermuda Recorder until the newspaper closed in 1975. He went on to work for the Corporation of Hamilton for 30 years.

Mr Place is a keen cricket fan and travels to Cup Match every year to cheer on Somerset.

Mr Burt said: “Mr Place’s life spans a period of tremendous development in Bermuda and his work with the Bermuda Recorder added to that publication’s significant voice on behalf of black Bermudians during the era of segregation.

“Mr Place is also a proud supporter of Cup Match and a true living legend in our community.

“I wish him many more years of health and happiness.”

Mr Place was born in 1916 — two years before the end of the First World War — and married Sadie Bassett in 1940.

The couple were married for nearly 60 years and had three children, Tucker, Glenda and Charlene.

Mr Place’s wife died in 1998.
