Butterfield Bank 2018 scholarships announced

A trio of talented and hard-working Bermudian students have been selected for academic scholarships each worth $25,000 annually.

Chanah Bremar, Ryan Dowling and Selena Dasilva were named as the recipients of the awards provided by Butterfield Bank.

Ms Bremar was named as the recipient of the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship.

The award recognises a Bermudian student pursuing an undergraduate degree at an overseas university.

Ms Bremar is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in engineering with a mechanical specialisation at Mercer University in Alabama.

She is currently designing and building an adjustable walker for people with post-polio syndrome.

The scholarship was started in 1978.

Mr Dowling was awarded the Butterfield Postgraduate Scholarship.

The scholarship is available to students from all jurisdictions around the world the bank operates who are studying in a field related to the betterment of island environments.

Mr Dowling is pursuing his Master of Science in carbon management, with a focus on environmental stability, at the University of Edinburgh.

He hopes to use his knowledge of carbon markets to enter the field of impact investing.

Ms Dasilva attends Dalhousie University, in Nova Scotia, Canada, where she pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in business.

She plans to major in accounting and pursue a chartered professional accountant designation.

Ms Dasilva was named as the recipient of the Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship for Employees’ Children.

The award is presented to the child of a Butterfield employee working towards an undergrad degree.

One scholarship is presented in each of three regions: Atlantic, including Bermuda; the Caribbean; and Europe.

All three scholarships are valued at $25,000 annually, tenable for up to four years.

McKeisha Smith, the chairwoman of Butterfield’s scholarship committee, said the three recipients had been selected from a “very large pool of very talented, deserving young people”.

She added: “Chanah, Ryan and Selena all demonstrated a great deal of passion for their chosen field of study and have shown exceptional leadership in other areas as well.

“We are pleased to be able to assist them in their pursuit of higher education, and we are excited to watch them progress in their academic careers.”
