World Post Day pushes the envelope

First class: World Post Day is to be observed next Tuesday

Bermuda will celebrate World Post Day next week with a series of events.

Bermuda Post Office staff will donate blood at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Monday.

Post offices will close at 1pm on Tuesday, which is World Post Day, for a staff meeting.

Lovitta Foggo, government reform minister, will open the new home of the Philatelic Bureau in Perot Post Office in Queen Street in Hamilton on Wednesday.

The 50th anniversary of the World Turtle Project will be marked on Thursday with the unveiling of panels on the letter floor of the General Post Office on Church Street in Hamilton.

Ms Foggo said: “Next week will serve as an opportunity to raise awareness of our postal sector’s contribution to Bermuda and to update on our reform initiatives for the post office.

“I would like to encourage the public’s support in our week of activities, which will highlight the importance of the postal service in our community.”

World Post Day, the anniversary of the establishment of the World Postal Union in Berne, Switzerland in 1874, is celebrated in more than 150 countries around the world.
