Representatives of St George and its historic forts visited London last week to attend the 2018 World Heritage UK Conference.

Elizabeth Christopher, a World Heritage Site Management Committee member, and Charlotte Andrews, acting heritage officer in the Government’s Department of Planning, attended the two-day Setting the Scene for World Heritage event.

Dr Andrews is coordinating a Unesco-required review of the St George’s World Heritage site management plan with the World Heritage Site Management Committee

She said: “The timing and theme of the World Heritage UK conference aligned with our current work.

“The issues we explored in London are informing our management plan review, which is taking a holistic look at the needs of the World Heritage Site and will involve extensive public consultation.

“The conference was also a chance for us to introduce Bermuda’s World Heritage Site to fellow delegates and to benefit from their expertise and experience, especially those who had recently reviewed their management plans.”

World Heritage UK’s mission is to promote and safeguard British World Heritage sites.

St George and its surrounding forts is one of only four World Heritage sites in UK Overseas Territories.

The others are Henderson Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands, Gough and Inaccessible Islands in Tristan da Cunha and Gorham’s Cave complex in Gibraltar.

Dr Andrews and Ms Christopher met advisers from the World Heritage Convention and also met World Heritage UK president Chris Blandford.

Mr Blandford visited Bermuda in May as part of a survey of all 31 UK World Heritage sites.
