The community is invited on a walk to mark the opening of the new Railway Bridge on Monday morning.

There will be a one-lane closure in the eastbound lane on North Shore Road in Smith’s for the event.

Anyone interested in participating in the walk should meet at Bailey’s Bay at 10.45am with the intention of walking from the inlet at Bailey’s Bay to Flatts. The event aims to celebrate and highlight the spans of the trail that have been completed by community group The Friends of the Bermuda Railway.

Anyone wishing a shorter walk can start at Shelly Bay Park at about 11.10am to give time to arrive at the new bridge by 11.45pm.

Motorists are advised to avoid the closed section and to use alternative routes during that time.

Access will be permitted for emergency vehicles. There will be a short ceremony at 11.45am with Bermuda Tourism Authority’s chief executive Kevin Dallas giving a speech.

The Friends of the Bermuda Railway have already seen new bridges installed at Store Hill and Bailey’s Bay as well as a raft of upgrades to the trail across the island.

Mike Murphy, who together with his son Tucker has spearheaded the scheme, said: “We need the attendance and show of support of as many trail users as possible to demonstrate the value of the trail improvements and connecting the trail.

“This is a chance to enjoy the new vistas and visit a part of the trail not as heavily used and get a first-hand impression of the improved trail facilities.

“We encourage families to come as well and are hoping that the weather will co-operate.

“The whole project is designed for health and tourism to help Bermudians and get them out walking.”

The one-lane closure will be in effect from the railway trail crossing on North Shore Road near the Police Beach to Flatts bridge at the inlet by Harrington Sound in Smiths.

The eastbound lane will be closed from 11.15pm to 2.15pm and traffic controls will be under the direction of the Ministry of Public Works Park’s Department.
