Scientology-linked couple to host forum

A mass mailing for The Way to Happiness brochure, which raised eyebrows last year because of its links to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, has returned for another round.

Dee Pearson, a Bermudian, with her American husband Don, said they funded the distribution out of their own pockets ahead of a forum tonight and tomorrow to discuss the booklet.

The couple are offering a presentation on the “moral code” at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club’s Princess Louise Ballroom both nights from 6.30pm to 8pm.

Mr Pearson said the couple had sent out “just north of 17,000 copies” to cover “every residence and post box in the four parishes of the East End of the island”.

The last posting, in December, covered the western half of Bermuda ahead of a similar round of talks at the Fairmont Southampton. The two presentations are free, and open to anyone.

Mr Pearson said it had been written by the late Mr Hubbard “to address the rampant crime, drug abuse, corporate and political corruption we see in society, and provide a path that can be followed by any person of any background, culture or creed to attain a happier, more prosperous and more fulfilling life”.

The slim pamphlet covers 21 moral precepts, and the Pearsons will talk about the chapters that had the most meaning in their lives.

Mr Pearson emphasised that he and his wife were “doing this as individuals — there is not anybody giving us money, and we do not work for Scientology or any other organisation”.

He added: “The book has been useful to us, and the message is something Dee has wanted to give to friends and family and fellow Bermudians.

“Her country has been good to her, and she wanted to share. She presents in a very personal way when she talks about it.”
