Webb to be paid $156,000 for EU job

Renée Webb

Renée Webb, a former tourism minister, is to receive $156,864 annually as Bermuda’s freshly appointed representative to the European Union.

Ms Webb’s one-year appointment to the Bermuda Government’s new office in Brussels, capital of Belgium and administrative centre for the EU, was unveiled last month.

Details about the post were given on Friday by David Burt, the Premier, in response to parliamentary questions from Michael Dunkley, the Opposition MP.

Mr Burt said that travel expenses for the job would be “met in accordance with standard terms and conditions of consultant contracts within the public services”.

The post of Brussels representative was not advertised, Mr Burt said.

The office was formally opened by Mr Burt on January 25 to strengthen Bermuda’s relationships with the EU, in the wake of extensive negotiations last year on economic substance.

At the time, the Premier cited the need for more than “shuttle diplomacy” and said Ms Webb, who has a background in international relations and international human rights law, would also liaise with Bermuda’s London office.

Mr Burt also said that a young Bermudian would be able to shadow Ms Webb to gain experience.

In his responses to Mr Dunkley, the Premier said there were no other staff or interns associated with the Brussels office.
