Today’s Earth Hour will focus on energy efficiency and include an expo designed to promote products that are kinder to the environment.

The annual event will be held in Dockyard from 3pm and includes a bike ride, fun walk, a run and live entertainment.

Environmental charity Greenrock will be supported in its efforts by the Earth Hour Council made up of representatives from Government, hosts West End Development Corporation, Belco, the Corporation of Hamilton, the Corporation of St George, BeSolar, and the Chamber of Commerce.

The energy expo takes place from 4pm to 7pm and will focus on local vendors selling energy efficient technology — there will be LED lights, energy efficient appliances, solar panels and electric vehicles including bikes, minicars, vans and trucks.

Eugene Dean, a Greenrock director, said: “Greenrock put a lot of effort into Bermuda’s integrated resource plan and we publicly endorsed the Bermuda Better Energy Plan, which focused on renewable energy alternatives to fossil fuel.

“Last year, we decided we wanted to promote electric vehicles and this year we decided to widen it to incorporate all these other elements.

“We are going from the simplest and cheapest things that can be done like LED bulbs, all the way up to the things that require the most investments such as an electric vehicle or solar panel installation.”

Earth Hour will begin at 3pm with the 25k Family Bike Ride, which will start at Hamilton’s City Hall and end at the Clock Tower in Dockyard.

The ride will feature electric assisted bicycles that can be rented for the run.

The Energy Expo will take place on the Clock Tower lawn from 4pm to 7pm, where guests can learn about energy conservation.

A 5K fun run will start at the Clock Tower at 6pm and will be followed by live entertainment.

Performers will include the Bermuda Jump Rope Foundation, Rivah and The Kings Band.

There will be a warm up for the Glow Walk which starts on the lawn at 8.30pm at 8.20pm.

Members of the public are encouraged to turn their lights off for an hour as a symbolic gesture between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

Lucky Elephant, a yoga centre in Hamilton, will hold a glow in the dark yoga session backed by a DJ at 8.30pm.

Wedco, which has outlined green programmes in Dockyard in a bid to promote energy efficiency.

These include a recycling programme, the installation of LED bulbs in street lights, solar panels and charging stations for electric cars.
