Young flautist Laura Frith has found the perfect way to sharpen her skills during the summer.

The 11-year-old has been volunteering to play the flute every Saturday for an hour in front of the Bermuda National Trust Museum.

Laura, who is often accompanied by her music instructor, Derek Tully, said that she saw the performances as an opportunity to keep on top of her practice.

She added: “It’s really fun. I was nervous the first time but now I’m getting used to it.

“My favourite part is probably getting to see different people from around the world and seeing how much they enjoy the music.”

Laura, a Somersfield Academy pupil from St George’s, has performed in front of the museum since the start of July after Dr Tully offered her the position.

She said: “I just wanted to keep my flute going during the summer, so I thought it was a good idea to go down and perform.

Laura said that the position helped her to train for the Associate of the Royal Schools of Music Grade 3 exam that she planned to take in November.

The exam will require her to play a selection of solo musical pieces for about 15 minutes.

Laura said: “I thought it was a cool idea because it would really give me a goal for flute.”

She has been practising since last November by finding new pieces of music and working on her musical scales.

Despite this, Laura said: “I’m kind of nervous for it because ARSM exams are really big.”

“I did my Grade 2 music exam in November and I’ve done a few music exams before, but I still get really nervous about them.”

Dr Tully, who volunteers at the museum, said that he had seen “little Laura” become more confident in her music thanks to the public performances.

He explained: “She’s getting used to the idea of performing in front of audiences instead of standing in a little practice room playing her flute to herself.”

Dr Tully added: “The tourists who have been coming in these last few weeks have been fascinated by her.

“Those with young families have said things like ‘we’re from Denver’ and little Laura would say ‘oh, I know a song by John Denver, shall I play it for you?’

“It’s good for St George’s and it’s good for the memories of those people who come to Bermuda and can say ‘we went to a museum in St George’s and there was a girl on the flute who played these lovely songs’.”

Laura will perform in front of the Bermuda National Trust Museum until September.
