A sailing programme for young people has opened up applications for its annual maritime careers scheme.The Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme will provide vocational training for youngsters interested in a life on the ocean waves.The programme is held in partnership with the Bermuda College Division of Professional & Career Education, and 21 youngsters have participated over the past two years.Courtney Dublin, 25, who completed the programme this year, said: “I improved my presentation skills and gained a better understanding of how presentation skills are advantageous both personally and professionally.“I also learnt there were more jobs in the marine industry or marine related than I expected.”Mr Dublin works at Cruise Port Ferry Management as a junior engineer and deckhand.The Endeavour programme will put youngsters through a seven-week training programme to gain internationally recognised qualifications from the Royal Yachting Association.Participants are also exposed to professional workshops and career days that can help them gain knowledge and connections in the maritime industry.Ethan Edmunds, 16, got a job with the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club as a dinghy instructor after he completed the programme.He also works with Ocean Sails as an apprentice sail-maker.Ethan said: “I feel very accomplished and satisfied with completing everything.”The Endeavour Maritime Careers Springboard Programme will take place from Monday to Friday and run from January 13 to February 28.Applicants should submit a CV and covering letter that outlines why they are an ideal candidate by e-mail to info@endeavour.bm.Submissions must be made by 5pm on November 30.Previous sailing experience is not necessary, but candidates must be available for the whole of the seven-week programme to be considered.Participation costs about $1,200 and covers certification and course fees, books and administrative fees from the Bermuda College and Royal Yachting Association coach fees for the international assessors.But financial assistance is available for those who would struggle to pay the fees.Interested youngsters can attend an information session tonight at 6pm in the Blue Room at Bermuda College.
