Stephens is Called to the Bar

A former tennis and squash player for her universities has been Called to the Bar.Victoria Stephens, of law firm Marshall Diel & Myers, became a member of the Bermuda Bar in a ceremony in front of Chief Justice Narinder Hargun.The 27-year-old, from Paget, told the gathering: “I begin this new chapter of my career at the Bermuda Bar eager to continue to further develop this voice and use it to make a positive contribution, not only to the Bermuda Bar, but to the greater Bermuda.”Adam Richards, a director of MDM and one of Ms Stephens’s pupil masters, told Mr Justice Hargun that she had a distinguished academic record, having earned a BA honours degree in international relations from the University of Western Ontario before getting a Bachelor of Laws degree, also with honours, from Exeter University in Britain.She went on to the University of Law, also in the UK, where she earned her legal practice course and a distinction in her Master of Laws degree in professional legal practice.Mr Richards added: “Ms Stephens has handled her pupillage with aplomb. She has confidently navigated her way through matrimonial law, commercial litigation and real estate, appearing unfazed and extremely confident while doing so.“Ms Stephens never appeared fazed by any task provided to her and has shown herself willing to roll up her sleeves and get on with the job.”Tim Marshall, cofounder and former managing director of MDM, added: “Victoria has been involved in some very difficult work during her pupillage and has successfully demonstrated an ability to distil relevant facts from complicated documents, apply the applicable law to these facts and thereafter to recommend a course of action that is practical and helpful to the client.”The ceremony was held on November 8.Ms Stephens, a former pupil at Branksome Hall in Toronto, is on the leadership committee of the Bermuda Young Group of the Bermuda Bar Association and is also the secretary of a sub-committee for the advancement of privacy law and appropriate regulation of the legal industry.
