A young woman has told of the lasting impact on her after she was the victim at age 14 in a case of unlawful carnal knowledge. She said she continues to suffer years after her virginity was taken in 2014 by Malik Zuill, now 22, who was sentenced to 12 months in prison for the offence. It is understood the term was later reduced on appeal to eight months. In a separate case, Zuill was sentenced to five months in jail in July this year, after admitting in Magistrates’ Court that he groomed and sexually assaulted an underage girl in 2015. He was released immediately because of time already served in custody. The woman involved in the earlier incident has written an anonymous account of her experiences, which is published in The Royal Gazette today. She said later: “I honestly feel like this isn’t going to give me closure; it’s just helping me to heal.”She added: “The only way I would ever get proper closure is if he serves the proper amount of time for what he did to me and to this other girl.”The woman explained: “I have a problem trusting everyone.“I have been in two proper relationships since then. I can’t even say ‘proper’, but it was hard.“Now I’m in a relationship, it’s easier because this person — I’ve told them about it from the start — they’re a bit more mature so they do understand. They know how to help me better.”She said she continued to get bullied through social media over the incident and received upsetting messages. The woman revealed: “Now, I don’t really get to know too many people. “If someone speaks to me, I either just snap at them and tell them not to speak to me or I just ignore them.”She added: “I do not travel at night alone — once it gets dark, I catch a taxi or my mum will pick me up.”The woman said last week: “If I’m sitting still or not too active or focused, it just comes back in my mind sometimes.”The victim added when she moved to Britain after Zuill’s release, she met him by chance in a club in England on New Year’s Day 2018. She said: “Since I saw him at that New Year’s, some nights I can’t even sleep.”She offered advice to other young girls who might find themselves targeted by a predator. The woman said: “I would say to always follow your gut and to always listen to your parents about someone.“If they say, ‘I feel that something is wrong with this person’, it’s best to believe that because they’re older than you — they can see the signs better.”• On occasion The Royal Gazette may decide to not allow comments on what we consider to be a controversial or contentious story.
