Pupils put hours in for charity

Schoolchildren contributed more than 1,400 hours to help charities in work that included support for a food bank and caring for wildlife.The 14 to 18-year-olds have earned $30,000 for each of their schools in PartnerRe’s Dollars for Hours programme.Their efforts were celebrated at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute recentlyPupils from the Bermuda Institute paired with the Bermuda Audubon Society in a bluebird nest box project; students from CedarBridge Academy joined the Bermuda National Trust in a project at the Gladys Morrell Nature Reserve in Somerset; and young people from Warwick Academy carried out gardening work with Westmeath Residential and Nursing Care Home.Mount Saint Agnes Academy pupils supported the Eliza DoLittle food bank; the Berkeley Institute and the Reading Clinic came together for a custom-built furniture project; and the Bermuda High School and the Bermuda Zoological Society worked on a Breakfast with Santa project.Saltus Grammar School paired up with Windreach to work on an anniversary video, and pupils from Somersfield Academy joined ConnecTech training centre to take part in a coding and shadowing project.Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education, and Jaime Masters McDowell, PartnerRe’s charitable giving chairwoman, congratulated the young people on their achievements. Ms Masters McDowell said: “Education is important to PartnerRe.“As a Bermudian company, we have a real interest in Bermuda and its young people. “Dollars for Hours makes a direct contribution to the schools, community and ultimately to the economy and creates a win-win situation for everyone involved.”The funds will be used by the participating schools for curriculum development, facility upgrades, student support programmes, student transport and technology upgrades.Dollars for Hours is now in its fourteenth year with $3.2 million donated to secondary schools by PartnerRe since it started.More than 2,600 pupils have teamed up with local causes that have benefited from more than 28,000 hours of hands-on support.
