Seafarers gathered yesterday for a service to remember those lost at sea. The Right Reverend Nicholas Dill, the Anglican Bishop of Bermuda, and Anglican priest Tom Slawson conducted the East End service. Two wreaths were later laid at the Lost at Sea Memorial at Great Head Park. One was laid on behalf of the Bermuda Branch Pilot Service and another was in memory of the late Roger Pitcher, a former employee with the Department of Marine and Ports. About 140 people attended the annual memorial service at the Chapel of Ease in St David’s.Pilot warden Mario Thompson said that the wreaths were to recognise those that had served at sea as well as those who had lost their lives on the water.Mr Thompson also read out the names of pilots and mariners who had died. Refreshments were served at St David’s Cricket Club after the commemoration. The memorial sculpture was created by artist Bill Ming in 2005.
