A panel talk tomorrow evening will discuss how to help women in jail, as well as ways to stop them from going to prison in the first place.Jasmine Patterson, a television news anchor and reporter, will moderate the talk, which is titled Women and the Criminal Justice System in Bermuda.Topics for discussion are expected to include statistics about women in prison, why they are jailed and the effect on families when mothers are locked up.The discussion was organised by the Women’s Resource Centre.Elaine Butterfield, the WRC’s charity’s executive director, said: “Our aim is to educate the public about the lives of women who have made wrong decisions for varying reasons and how we as a society can support them through reintegration and beyond. “This is always an incredible opportunity to learn from each other and we hope that many women from all walks of life will come out and show their support.”The WRC said that the talk will also cover a variety of subjects, such as: “What does or should successful reintegration into society look like for women who have been incarcerated?“What support and preventive systems exist to keep women from going to prison?“As a society, how do we need to change to support successful reintegration of women who have been incarcerated?”It is hoped up to 100 women will attend the meeting, which will include a panel of experts and opportunities to ask questions.Funds raised at WRC events help to cover the costs of workshops for women who cannot afford them, as well as counselling and other support services.• The event will be held from 6pm to 8pm at the Vasco Da Gama Club on Reid Street. Tickets cost $50, which will include a snack and a drink, and can be bought at the WRC on the second floor of Sofia House at 48 Church Street or by phone at 295-3882 or by e-mail at wrc@wrcbermuda.com
