A man has been jailed for 14 months after he admitted a string of theft-related charges.Dean O’Brien, 58, pleaded guilty at Magistrates’ Court to an attempt to enter a house in Paget and trespassing with intent to steal.He also pleaded guilty to prowling charges and the theft of $300 worth of oranges.The court heard that the owner of the Paget house saw O’Brien attempt to enter his land on January 27.O’Brien ran off when the property owner confronted him and followed him along Manse Road by motorcycle, then called police.Maria Sofianos, for the Crown, told the court on Wednesday that O’Brien tried to break in to another Paget house later that day and was detected by the home security system.The owner was alerted by the security footage and asked his neighbour to check the property.The neighbour later told him that the rear entrance to the house had been damaged and Mr Knight phoned the police.The neighbour also found O’Brien near the front of the house and confronted him.O’Brien said he was “just looking around” and left the premises, but the neighbour followed him until police arrived and arrested O’Brien.The court also heard that O’Brien entered the grounds of a house in Warwick twice on January 15 and stole more than 60 oranges from a tree.The owner of the property saw that his tree was missing most of its fruit the next day and checked his security cameras.O’Brien, from St George’s, admitted the charges on January 29 and was ordered to attend drug treatment court.However, on Wednesday, he told the court that he was “not ready” for treatment court and asked instead to be sentenced.Mr Wolffe sentenced O’Brien to 14 months’ imprisonment for each charge, to run concurrently.
