An emergency homeless shelter has been moved from Pembroke to Prospect.The shelter, set up under the state of emergency shelter in place regulations, was transferred from the Berkeley Institute to CedarBridge Academy.Kathy Lynn Simmons, the Attorney-General, said it had been “an extraordinary undertaking” to house 40 people at a site normally used for emergency shelter in hurricanes.The homeless accommodation was moved to the gymnasium of the Devonshire school to provide better social distancing and extra facilities.Medical staff will also be on site.Ms Simmons said the shelter would operate on a 24 hour basis, including “regular cleaning, maintenance, meals and bathroom facilities”. A total of 40 beds were set up, with separate areas for men and women.Folding cots were transported to the new site by Royal Bermuda Regiment soldiers on Thursday.The shelter was cleared for use on Wednesday by the Department of Environmental Health.There will be a minimum of four staff on site at all times.Ms Simmons said a psychiatric nurse from the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute and St John Ambulance staff would be available between 6am to 6pm.The addiction service Turning Point will also be on site during the day.Ms Simmons said: “We do realise that as the health challenges mount, resources such as doctors and nurses will become scarcer.“Therefore, we would like members of the community, particularly, doctors and nurses, to volunteer their services if possible.”Volunteers should contact 707-2223.• To read the statement from Kathy Lynn Simmons in full, click on the PDF under “Related Media”
