A thrift store is to sell clothes at bargain basement prices to help families that have struggled because of the Covid-19 crisis.

ReStore Thrift Shop will sell most of its stock for between $1 and $2 to help clear its inventory and help people in their time of need.

Mark Hall, the director of the Word of Life charity, owner of the Paget-based store, explained: “Money’s tight for everybody and most thrift stores are too full.

“We’ve quickly become overstuffed and we figured if people are hurting, why don’t we just make the clothing as available as possible?”

Mr Hall said that the sale would start today and be held throughout the second and third phases of the reopening of Bermuda. He added that the store, in Paget, will offer clothing for men, women and children and a selection of toys — all of which has been donated to them since mid-January.

Mr Hall said: “We have plenty of new things. You’d be surprised how many people have new stuff hanging in their closet and we get it with the tags still on.”

The store opened its doors at the start of February, but was forced to close in March because of Covid-19 safety regulations.

Mr Hall said that the store had at first priced most of its clothes between $4 and $14.

He added that some designer clothes would be about 30 per cent off, but that “almost everything in the store will be between $1 and $2.”

Word of Life Bermuda is a Christian charity focused on development programmes for young people.

It is part of Word of Life International, which has operations in 69 countries.

The charity was given Grace Island, north of Southampton, which it had often rented for events, by the Grace Island Foundation in 2018.

The foundation was headed by Fernance Perry, the former owner of TV station ZBM, until his death in 2014.

ReStore was started to help fund the restoration of the island.

Mr Hall said that the organisation planned to build camp grounds to cater to Bermudian and international youth organisations.

He added: “We’re hoping to start the actual construction this fall and it will be built over two years.”

ReStore, on the second floor of the Sports Source Warehouse on Paget’s Harvey Road, will be open to customers from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The store will accept donations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
